RES R. 24 Arn 22

The Director of Military Operations and Intelligence presents his compliments to the Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, and begs to state that it is desired to print an edition of the 2-inch to one mile map of Hong Kong and adjacent territory for military purposes.

The 8-inch map of Hong Kong was prepared by the Colonial Engineer's Department but the Tar Office undertook the reproduction, and it is marked "For War Dept. use only", The 2-inch map appears to be based on the 8-inch, but no information is available at the Tar Office as to the circumstances of its origin. is presumed that it was prepared for Colonial Government purposes at the expense of the Colony.

It

Major-General Sir William Thwaites would be obliged if Sir James Masterton Smith would give per- mission for this map to be used for War Office purposes, as it is the most complete map available at about that scale, and would be of great value to the local troops.

If approval is given it is proposed that arrange- ments should be made direct with the Director-General of the Ordnance Survey for the printing of such numbers as are required.
